Summer is fast approaching, and you don’t want to get stuck with no air conditioning in your vehicle. It gets hot and humid in Atlanta, Georgia. Now is a good time to have McCurley’s Shell inspect your vehicle’s AC system. Here is a list of common air conditioner problems that we are experts in fixing.
AC Doesn’t Blow Cold Air
The point of turning on the air conditioner in your automobile is to get cold air blowing through the vents. When this doesn’t happen, you likely have a refrigerant leak that you cannot see. Without enough refrigerant, the air conditioner will be unable to cool the air blowing through the vents.
Air Doesn’t Blow Through the Vents
Your air conditioning system may have plenty of refrigerant but when you turn it on, nothing happens. If you can’t get air to blow through your vents, you may have a blown fuse, bad relay, damaged blower motor or resistor, blocked air intake, or damage to the AC system belts and/or hoses.
Air Is Cool But Not Cold
If you haven’t had your vehicle’s air conditioner serviced in years, chances are your refrigerant level is low because of natural evaporation. In this case, when you turn on the AC, the air will be cool but not as cold as it normally is. Have the refrigerant checked annually to prevent this from happening.
Another cause of cool but not cold air is a blocked condenser. If the air conditioning condenser is clogged, it will not be able to cool down the refrigerant effectively before the air blows out of the vents and into your vehicle’s passenger cabin.
Noisy AC
There might be a slight change in how your engine sounds when you turn on your automobile’s air conditioner, but you shouldn’t hear any strange sounds such as banging or rattling. You shouldn’t hear whining or squealing, either. If you do, there’s something wrong with the AC system.
Wet Floorboards
If you have bacteria building up on the AC’s evaporator coil, you might end up with wet floorboards underneath your dashboard. The reason why this happens is that the natural condensation produced by the air conditioner mixes with the bacteria and creates a slimy mess.
Inconsistent Air Temperature
Finally, there is an expansion valve that releases the right amount of refrigerant into the AC system when you turn it on. This valve continues to work while the AC is on. If the valve fails, you may notice that the air blowing through the vents goes from cold to warm to hot inconsistently.
