If your car’s radio keeps turning off by itself, it’s possible that the alternator is going bad. This is the electrical system part that generates voltage. Specifically, the alternator generates a maximum of 14.5 volts when it is operating correctly. McCurley’s Shell advises that a malfunctioning car radio and other accessories suggest that the alternator is not powering them properly. This is just one sign that your vehicle needs a new alternator. Here are the other signs.
An Engine That Stalls Frequently
The alternator also powers the spark plugs so that they can fire up the air and fuel in the combustion chamber. If the alternator is not producing enough power for each plug, your engine will start to misfire and stall frequently. Replacing the faulty alternator generally restores your engine’s performance.
An Overloaded and Hot Electrical System
The alternator may also overload the electrical system if it is malfunctioning. Sometimes, when an alternator is dying, it will actually produce more than 14.5 volts. When this happens, it overloads the electrical system and you will smell burning wires and burning wire insulation coming from the engine.
Difficult Starts or a Dead Battery
A dying alternator can also make it difficult to start your automobile because it will be unable to keep the battery charged. This is another one of the alternator’s responsibilities. Unfortunately, this can make starting your vehicle difficult if not impossible. The battery will be dead constantly if the alternator isn’t charging it.
Dim or Overly Bright Lights
You can tell whether the alternator is producing too little or too much electricity based on your vehicle’s lights. If they are dim or flickering, the alternator is not producing enough electricity. If they are too bright, the alternator is producing too much electricity.
Grinding, Growling, or Squealing Sounds
Grinding, growling, or squealing sounds coming from the engine can be an indication of a faulty alternator. The grinding and growling may come from the alternator itself. The squealing sounds can come from the alternator belt if it is too loose.
Illuminated Dashboard Warning Lights
Finally, you may end up with dashboard warning lights on the dashboard if the alternator is malfunctioning. Specifically, these lights pertain to your vehicle’s electrical system and they are a battery-shaped light, an ALT light, or a GEN light.
